Description
Painted in 1896, this large group portrait gathers Renoir’s household in a garden: a boy in a sailor suit at left holds hands with an older girl in a flowered blouse and an elaborate green-trimmed bonnet, while at center a seated woman in a cream dress steadies a toddler in a white gown and oversized white bonnet. To the right, a young girl in a red dress and straw boater turns away, a striped ball tucked under her arm. Renoir sets the family against a sunlit garden of green lawn and trees, glimpsed through a stone gateway. Now in the Barnes Foundation, the large canvas is one of Renoir’s most ambitious multi-figure compositions.
Offered as a museum-quality canvas or fine-art print, made to order, its scale and warm, garden setting make it a striking choice for a living room or family room.
