Description
Tall white sailboats crowd the middle of this river scene, their sails rendered in thick, chalky strokes that catch the light against a pale, sun-bleached sky. A grassy bank runs along the left edge, dotted with small dark figures of spectators watching the race, while a rowing boat with a seated figure sits closer to shore among the reeds.
Renoir leaves much of the canvas’s woven texture visible through thin washes of paint, especially in the sky and water, giving the whole scene an airy, sketch-like immediacy. The river below mirrors the sails and grassy bank in loose, broken strokes of blue and green, and a smaller sailboat glimpsed near the horizon at right suggests the race stretches on beyond the frame.
This work is available as a hand-painted oil reproduction on canvas or as an archival giclée canvas print, both faithful reproductions of the original held at the National Gallery of Art, not the original painting itself.
