Description
Two apples sit close together on a rumpled white cloth, painted with a loose, almost sketch-like urgency. The larger apple is streaked in yellow-green with touches of blue and a dab of deep green near its crown, thin red lines suggesting bruises or ripening marks along its lower half; the smaller apple beside it glows a warm, uniform orange-red.
Renoir builds the whole picture from thick, visible strokes, the white cloth left in broad unblended passages of cream and pale grey-blue, with a scatter of loose dots along the top edge hinting at a patterned wallpaper or fabric behind. The economy of the composition, just two fruits and a cloth, keeps the focus entirely on color and paint handling rather than fine detail.
This small, vigorously painted fruit study, Apples (Pommes), held at the Barnes Foundation, is offered as a made-to-order canvas reproduction in a range of sizes up to large formats, shipped worldwide.
